Learning Through Play
School Readiness
By the end of your child's time with us at Community Pre-School we want them to be ready for that next important step into primary school and to have developed the skills outlined below .

What does being ready for school mean?
Ready children*
• I am curious and want to play and learn
• I feel good about myself and like it when you praise me
• I am starting to know when I am happy, sad or cross
• I can let you know what I need and tell you about what is important to me
• I can settle when you leave me knowing you will be back soon
• I can play with other children and I am learning to take turns
• I can make simple choices
• I am willing to have a go and keep on trying
• I can use lots of different words about things that interest me and use them when I play
• I can listen and take turns in conversation with grown-ups and children
• I can follow simple instructions
• I can join in with favourite songs, rhymes or stories
• I can go to the toilet and dress myself most of the time
• I am an active and confident mover both indoors and outdoors

Other ways we help towards school readiness

We know from experience that moving to school is an anxious time for both children and parents. Community Pre-Schools, as part of our service to you and your child, will assist you in any way we can in ensuring a smooth transition from pre-school setting to primary school.

We will hold meetings with the local primary school teacher or representative when they contact us to arrange to visit us and we will discuss each child and issue a Transition To School Progress Report. This helps to give them an understanding of the progress and development of the children and allow them to plan for their arrival at school. Where appropriate we may be invited to visit the school to help the child to settle in particularly if the child has additional needs
Your child will be offered a place in a Nursery or Reception class at primary school when he or she is 4 years old. Legally, your child does not have to start school until he or she is of compulsory school age which is the term after your child turns 5. You can still receive the FEEE until this point. Once your child is attending school (even on a part time basis) we will no longer be eligible to claim for the FEEE on your behalf.
